Week One Recap
Oly-Pen 8 🆚 Vancouver 5
This matchup was touted as game of the week, and it lived up to the hype. It was a tasty affair that had both teams eager to stamp their authority on the game, perhaps overzealous at times as a flurry of cards and fouls were given resulting in 20 minutes of the match being played on a power play. Vancouver struck immediately in the 2nd, but Oly-Pen responded with three unanswered goals to lead 4-2 at half. The 3rd quarter ended in a tie, with both teams scoring two goals each. Oly Pen clinched the last quarter 2-1, securing an 8-5 victory in their home opener. The return of pro players DeLuna and Steigerwald, who had been away playing for @thetacomastars @empire.strykers and @stlouisambush boosted Oly's performance. Vancouver displayed a competitive debut and aims to build on it in future games. Tacoma Stars Reserves 5 🆚 Oly Town 2 A cagey affair at Tacoma Soccer Center saw both teams committed to winning. Tacoma threatened early, breaking the deadlock with a neatly finished goal by Souza, who had 11 goals in the @maslsoccer last season. Defenses held strong until half. In the third quarter, both teams got on the scoreboard, with Tacoma leading 3-1 going into the 4th. The final quarter saw Oly Town trying to make a comeback, but a Nate Boatright goal wasn't enough. Stars Reserves converted two more to secure the win. Snoco 6 🆚 South Sound 22 Snohomish played in their new facility, Arena Sports, in front of an enthusiastic crowd. South Sound FC, under former Tacoma Star Derek Johnson's leadership, featured familiar WISL regulars Zurfluh, Sammartino, and Balmer. The first half was a shootout, ending 6-3 in favor of Sound. The game settled down, and Sound controlled the tempo, scoring four more while shutting out Snohomish, leading 10-3 at half. Snohomish rallied in the 3rd, scoring two goals and holding Sound to only two, ending the quarter at 12-5. In the 4th, Sound dominated, scoring nine goals and conceding only one for a 22-6 win. This was Sound's highest recorded goals in a game, and the third-highest ever in the WISL, behind Bellingham's twice recorded 26.
